Health NotesWe can't avoid it. It's the headlines and lead stories everywhere. What is it? It's the swine flu or, to be politically and technically correct, virus R1N1. This isn't just swine flu, apparently has combined with human and bird flu and there are no available vaccinations.
What can we do to avoid it or treat it without pharmaceuticals? After several conversations with naturopaths there seems to be a general consensus that what you eat and the supplements that you take will, along with excellent hygiene will help you avoid R1N1.
Here are their basic tips to avoid contracting any virus:
- Stay alkalized. Eat plenty of vegetables, fruits and grains.
- Avoid sugars.
- Make certain you take a good multi vitamin and support it with plenty of Vitamin C both in your food intake and as a supplement. This month we will be introducing to the website the Lypo-Spheric Vitamin C that I take.
- Wash, wash, wash your hands. And make certain not to touch your nose, eyes, or mouth while in public places.
- Sleep. Allow the body to rejuvenate.
- Don't be afraid.I carry a small size of hand sanitizer and when I leave a public place I sanitize my hands before I ever touch the car door or steering wheel. Any germs I might have picked up won't be going home with me.
It is amazing how simple it can be to safeguard yourself against contagious illness. Stay healthy by eating properly and by taking supplements, allow yourself plenty of rest to help the body stay healthy, and be hygienic.
If you have a flu bug the naturopaths recommended that you immediately consult your naturopath who will probably suggest Vitamin C IV drips with glutathion. This will help your body's natural immune responses and Vitamin C is a natural anti-viral. Make certain you are getting plenty of magnesium and fluids and if you are taking a pharmaceutical anti-viral be certain that you also take a good probiotic.
All of the naturopaths recommended vegetable soup and fresh juices as a means to help you achieve and alkalized balance of the body's pH. A cup of hot water with freshly squeezed lemon will also help you stay alkalized and if you have a scratchy throat add a teaspoon of locally produced honey. Avoid foods that are difficult to digest.
You can help ease a fever by putting you feet in a tub of cold or iced water. It will pull the fever out of the body through the feet. Warm moist towels across the eyes and nose can reduce a headache and a warm towel can help alleviate body aches.
Sleep. It's important to surrender to the need for sleep, even if it seems excessive, as it is a wonderful natural healer.
I am sure I am probably preaching to the choir, but health is our most valuable asset and if a gentle reminder helps us follow basic and simple steps to maintain health and vitality or overcome illness, then I'll take the reminder.
I also want to focus on something that is affecting many of us; fatigue. We, as a general global population, are fatigued mentally and emotionally by all of the bad news we are bombarded with on a daily basis. I repeated hear the word exhausted from people I talk to and when I dig a little deeper they usually add that they feel overwhelmed by everything happening in the world.
So how do overcome fatigue? In some cases, simply adjusting your lifestyle to include appropriate dietary, exercise and sleep needs will be enough to combat fatigue. Exercise and fresh air can elevate your mood, so get out and connect with nature. In other cases where medical causes are at play, treating the medical illness is the first plan of action. Always consult your primary care provider and explain what you are experiencing. They will be able help you determine the best plan of action for you.
Natural herbal and homeopathic remedies can be a great help when trying to combat fatigue. Certain herbs are known for their tonic effect on systemic functioning as well as their ability to increase strength and endurance, while energizing both mind and body.
Herbs such as Siberian Ginseng, Olea europea (extract of olive leaf) and Centella asiatica are commonly used to fight fatigue and boost energy without negative side effects - like those possible with pharmaceutical or dietary stimulants. These herbal ingredients can be taken to naturally assist overall systemic functioning, help to balance all body systems naturally and are often taken by athletes, those recovering from illness or those that need the extra boost to help manage a busy lifestyle.
Aromatherapy can also bring your spirits up. Amyris and bergamot are two of the more traditional mood elevating blends that are often used for depression. Peppermint relieves mental fatigue and the citrus essential oils are very energizing. Another helpful tip to fight fatigue is meditation. Meditation can take you any direction you choose to pursue. A walking meditation is always something that energizes as it relaxes you or you might like to try a guided meditation. We have several available on the site. Remember that meditation is not emptying the mind; that is impossible. It is focusing on one aspect. Whether that focus is breath, steps, or another's words that guide you must be determined by you. Explore meditation and make certain that you take time for yourself when you are feeling fatigued.
